Senator Hillary Clinton Concedes, Backs Obama
The Democratic race for president has officially ended and Barack Obama is the winner. Last Saturday, Hillary Clinton suspended her own 17-month campaign for the nomination. She gave a speech at the National Building Museum in Washington DC. With former President Bill Clinton and others watching, she threw her support to Barack Obama, saying "'I am standing with Senator Obama to say, 'Yes we can!'"
The final two primaries were held last week with Senator Clinton winning South Dakota and Senator Obama winning Montana. Over the course of all the primaries, each candidate collected more than 17 million votes. Although the race was very close, Obama won more delegates. As the primaries ended, growing numbers party officials, called super delegates, moved to endorse him and his victory was certain.
Both candidates and all the Democratic delegates will meet in Denver, Colorado at the end of August. At their convention Obama will officially accept the nomination. And what's next for Clinton? She is still the senator from New York and will return to Congress. But many of her loyal supporters hope that Obama will ask her to run with him as his vice-presidential candidate. Will Obama choose his arch rival after the two clashed during the long hard-fought campaign? Stay tuned!
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week.
