Big Brown Bombs at Belmont

Big Brown couldn't do it. The racehorse needed to win the Belmont Stakes to become greatest horse of his generation. But Da'Tara was the surprise winner and Big Brown finished last!

Big Brown was trying to win racing's Triple Crown. It is made up of three races--the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness Stakes, and the Belmont. The races take place over seven weeks so it is very tough for one horse to win them all. The last Triple Crown winner was a horse named Affirmed, and that was 30 years ago.

Big Brown was given a big chance to finally do it again. He won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with ease. But when the time came to charge to the lead and win the Belmont, Big Brown did not have the energy to do it.

So what went wrong? Nobody knows for sure. It was a very hot day at Belmont and the mile and a half race demands lots of stamina. Or maybe Big Brown's hoof was a problem. He had a crack in it, which was repaired with glue. His trainer insisted that he was fine, but Big Brown did lose practice time while waiting for the hoof to heal. One thing is for sure. You never know what might happen in a horse race!

I'm Lucy and that's what happened in sports this week!
