Is Health Really Wealth?
It's no fun getting sick. But falling ill without health insurance can make things a whole lot worse.
Recently released census data revealed the good news that the number of American families living in poverty had decreased in 2006. Yet the number of Americans without health insurance has grown by over two million to fourty-seven million people! Some of the worst affected are children. Almost nine million American kids don't have health insurance.
The situation is even worse in families living with very low incomes -- about nineteen percent of those kids are uninsured. Skyrocketing health care costs are to blame. Many employers who used to pay for their worker's health care and that of their families, have stopped providing care due to costs. Uninsured people may not receive critical care they need or, if they do, may end up paying thousands of dollars in medical bills.
The sharp increase in the uninsured is particularly alarming, according to experts, because even those with well-paying jobs are finding insurance too expensive. The decline in the number of insured Americans has sparked debate in Washington. Health is wealth, as the saying goes. But something is wrong when only the wealthy can afford to stay healthy.
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week!
