Sharapova Shocker at U.S. Open

The 2007 United States Open tennis championship began with a stunning upset. Defending women's champion Maria Sharapova of Russia was defeated by unknown 18-year-old Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland. Wow!

The U.S. Open is one of the four "grand slam" tournaments in tennis so all of the greatest men's and women's tennis stars are competing at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York. They will battle for two weeks in front of sellout crowds. The men's and women's singles winners will each take home $1,400,000 in prize money.

Sharapova's defeat has created excitement in the women's single competition. The Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, have both played extremely well and continue to advance. Serena faces top ranked Justine Henin of Belgium this week. The winner of that match has a great chance to win it all.

The favorites on the men's side are Roger Federer of Switzerland and Rafael Nadal of Spain who squared off in this year's final at Wimbledon. Federer who has won three U.S. Opens is the top seeded male player. Nadal is nursing a sore knee but has advanced so far. The crowd favorite on the men's side may be Andy Roddick of the USA who won his country's championship last year and hopes to repeat. May the best man... and woman... win!
