World Unites to Create Digital Library

Think you can find just about everything on the Internet? Just wait! The Library of Congress is working with a part of the United Nations called the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization or UNESCO on a World Digital Library. With the help of countries and companies around the world they plan to create the largest library ever made.

The world digital library will be online, and it will be completely free. It will be translated into many languages. Users will be able to gain access to rare books, photos, and even music.

People everywhere are pitching in to help. Google, Apple, and Intel are helping out with technology. Egypt said that they'd be scanning books and manuscripts. Brazil is adding 23,000 photographs from a collection that's a hundred years old. The National Library of Russia is planning to add over 35 million items. From America there are old films, and a voice recording from a 101-year-old man named Fountain Hughes whose grandfather was a slave who belonged to Thomas Jefferson.

The world digital library will be open in 2009. It'll help people understand more about other countries, help researchers find information, and be a lot of fun for anyone who wants to know more about other people, places, and times.

I'm Isaac and that's what happened in technology this week.

Let's play the pinpoint game and locate the countries that were mentioned in my story.
