Honoring Dalai Lama Angers China
Last week President Bush and the United States Congress angered the Chinese government. They welcomed and honored a man that China wants them to ignore. His name is Tenzin Gyatso, and he is the Dalai Lama. Congress gave the Dalai Lama a Congressional Gold Medal. President Bush called him a man of faith, sincerity, and peace.
The Dalai Lama is the Buddhist spiritual leader of a region in China called Tibet. Many Tibetans don't want to be part of China, they want to have their own country. In 1959, there was an uprising in Tibet and the Chinese Army came and crushed it. The Dalai Lama and other Tibetan leaders fled the country and have lived in India ever since.
Although he is a hero to many people, the Chinese government considers the Dalai Lama to be a problem. They accuse him of wanting Tibet to be separate from China and they call him a traitor. A spokesperson for China said that the meeting hurt the feelings of the Chinese and would be bad for the relations between China and the US. When Buddhist monks in Tibet tried to celebrate the Dalai Lama's honor, Chinese police stopped them.
The Dalai Lama was grateful for the support from the U.S. government. He said that meeting President Bush felt like the reunion of a big family.
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week.
Do you think President Bush should have honored the Dalai Lama? Let me know in my call out.
