Cavemen and Women Had Modern Ideas
Did cavewomen wear lipstick? Probably not, but they might have worn some kind of makeup. Archaeologists found a cave in South Africa with signs of life from 160,000 years ago. They discovered crushed red rocks that might have been used as makeup. They also found the remains of shellfish like mussels, clams, sea snails, and barnacles, plus small knives and tools in the cave.
The scientists figured out that the cave people were cooking the shellfish over hot rocks. The scientists even tried to cook the same way and discovered that when they put a shellfish on a hot rock, it pops open when it's ready to eat.
The discovery of makeup, mussels and utensils changed the way archaeologists think about ancient humans. Those are signs of more modern life. Archaeologists used to think that people didn't start doing things like cook and eat seafood until 40,000 years ago. Now they think that maybe people did for a while, and then stopped.
Even the people who did stay put and cook shellfish only seemed to do that when they went to the beach. They didn't spread their technology to other parts of Africa. Even 100,000 years later, they were still hunting and gathering for food, which means they moved around, instead of staying in one place, which is a more modern way to live.
I'm Adelbert and that's what happened in Science this week!
Think you know a lot about ancient man? Let's play just the facts and find out.
