San Francisco OKs IDs

San Francisco has passed a law allowing all people living in the city to get identification cards, including illegal aliens. Illegal aliens live and work in the United States without permission from the government. There are over 11 million illegal immigrants in the US and there are different ideas about what might be done to help them.

Most adults use a driver's license for ID, but illegal immigrants can't get a license. As a result they don't have a way to do simple things like open a bank account or get a library card. They also might be afraid to get help from the police or a hospital because they don't want to get caught and sent back to their home country.

That's why San Francisco is giving illegal aliens identification cards. They could use the cards to open a bank account, or get help at a hospital if they are sick. The law also helps other people who are often without driver's license IDs, including the elderly and homeless people.

San Francisco isn't the only place that is thinking about how to give ID to illegal aliens. Governor Elliot Spitzer wanted the illegal immigrants in New York to have driver's licenses so that they would at least be driving legally. But strong opposition forced him to change his plan.

I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week.

Do you think illegal aliens should get ID cards? Tell me what you think in this week's Call Out.
