Girls Score Top Spots in Science Competition

There was a time when many people thought science and math were only for boys. Well if there was any question whether that time is over, last week proved it. Girls took top place in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science, and Technology. This national competition challenges high school students to conduct scientific research and present their findings. The winners receive college scholarships for their hard work.

First place in the individual category went to Isha Jain from Pennsylvania. The 16-year-old won a $100,000 scholarship last Monday. She won the prize for showing how bones grow in zebrafish. Her discovery was published in an academic journal and the judges said it was graduate school level work!

The first place team winners were two 17-year-old girls from New York. Janelle Schlossberger and Amanda Marinoff won for creating a new molecule that can be used in the treatment of tuberculosis. They will share a $100,000 scholarship.

This year 48 percent of the contestants were girls and the number goes up every year. Isha Jain said that in most math and science competitions, there are still seven or eight boys for every girl. Now more girls are finally stepping up to the plate, and she's proud to be a part of it. You go, girls!
