US: Iran Not Making a Nuclear Bomb
In a report released last week called the National Intelligence Estimate, the United States government said that Iran is not trying to make a nuclear bomb. The US has been very worried that Iran, a country in the Middle East that has called for the destruction of Israel, was attempting to make nuclear weapons. However, now a group of 16 different government agencies says Iran stopped its weapon-making program in 2003. The group includes the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Army Military Intelligence.
This was a big surprise because in 2005, the same group said that Iran WAS working on nuclear weapons. Now the group says they were wrong on that point. This is good news for the US government because it means it can worry less about Iran's intentions and focus on the war in Iraq.
Iran is still enriching radioactive uranium so it has the material to make a bomb in the future. But its leaders insist that they are only using the nuclear material in a peaceful program to produce electricity. President Bush says that he is pleased to hear the news, but remains very skeptical. He wants Iran to let inspectors come into Iran to look at the uranium and prove that there aren't any plans to build bombs.
