Hannah Montana in Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart and Disney announced big plans to make money on Hannah Montana. Hannah Montana is a TV show that stars Miley Cyrus. She's 15 and her dad is a country music star. So many kids love the show, that when she goes on concert tours every single show sells out.

A film of her tour is about to open, and even that will have sold-out shows. With all these fans, and all this attention, Wal-Mart and Disney decided to put Hannah Montana Shops into Wal-Marts across the country.

The shops will sell T-shirts, wigs, games and other products. The idea of using a television character or movie star to sell cups and toys is called licensing. In this case, companies that make things for Wal-Mart will pay Disney to use Hannah Montana's name and picture to put onto their products.

Licensing seems like a modern idea, but it goes back all the way to the 1770s, when a skin cream company paid to use the name of a countess when it sold its product. The first time Disney sold a license for its properties was in 1930. Since then, using famous names and faces on toys, games and clothes has been a way for movie and TV stars to make a lot of money, and for their fans to enjoy what they do.

I'm Isaac and that's what happened in technology this week.
