Extreme Cold Weather Paralyzes China
The worst blast of winter weather in 50 years created a crisis in China this week. Snow, ice, and extreme cold shut down train stations, created 40-mile traffic jams and knocked out electricity for many millions of Chinese. The timing of all the trouble couldn't have been worse! The weather hit just as millions of migrant workers were trying to get home to celebrate Chinese New Year with their families.
The Chinese government has mobilized the army to deal with the problem with this ongoing crisis. About 460,000 troops were sent to help clear snow. Supplies of food and coal are now moving by train to the worst hit areas. But there is still a lot of work to be done. Hundreds of thousands of people crowded around the railway station in the city of Guangzhou. For many of these workers, this holiday is the only time all year they get to go home and see there families. Many will not make it this year.
In recent years, winter weather in China has become increasingly unpredictable. The last few winters there were some of the mildest ones ever. This year's cold snap hit the southeastern part of the country which is not used to frigid weather. The country will have to be better prepared to handle winter weather surprises in the future.
I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week.
