New Border Rules Begin
There are new rules for Americans who travel to Mexico and Canada. When someone crosses the border between those countries, they have to talk to immigration officers. These border agents are supposed to make sure that no one who does not belong in the US can enter the country.
Until now, when American citizens crossed the border from Mexico or Canada, they could just tell the border agent that they were citizens, and if the agent believed them, that was good enough. The new rules say that American citizens must now show proof that they are citizens. Common examples of proof include a driver's license and a birth certificate, or a US passport. The border change was made by the Department of Homeland Security to make it more difficult for suspected terrorists to enter the country.
The new rule went into effect last week, but most people didn't seem to know it. At the borders, people were coming into America without the right papers. So many people cross the border, that the agents are letting them through with a warning, because if they stopped everyone without proof, the border would be a huge crowded mess. Over 400 million people come into the US every year, so it might take some time for everyone to learn the new rules.
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week.
