Scientists Discover a Noisy Dinosaur
The fossils of a giant-duck billed, plant-eating music-making dinosaur was discovered in the deserts of Mexico. 72 million years ago, that desert was a beach. The fossil took years to put together from many broken pieces that were stuck 12 feet down in the dirt and rocks for millions and millions of years.
The duck bill had long nostrils that might have been able to make noise. The scientist who discovered the fossil thinks that the trumpet-like sounds would have made music.
The creature was totally unique. It even had a hollow part in the top of its head that it breathed through. The dinosaur was 25 feet long, but it wasn't a full grown adult. It probably would have grown another ten feet.
The new species is called Velafrons coahuilensis. That's Latin for 'Sailed Head from Coahuila.' Coahuila is the state in Mexico where it was found. The sail-head part of the name is because it had a sail shaped crest on the top of its head. The scientist who led the team that discovered it called the dinosaur's head 'totally bizarre and freakish.'
