National Text Message Alerts
Here's the 4-1-1 on a new 9-1-1. The federal government has come up with a novel way to warn Americans in case of an emergency -- sending a text message warning. The Federal Communications Commission will create a new agency that will be in charge of a new national alert system.
That new agency will work with the country's mobile phone companies to find a way to reach all their customers with text messages. The warning system will have three kinds of alerts. There will be presidential alerts that warn about major national emergencies like terrorist attacks. There will be imminent threat alerts for specific areas that might be in danger from hurricanes or tornados. And there will be Amber Alerts for missing children.
Currently the government is using both radio and television as a way of sending out warnings to people about dangerous events such as hurricanes and tornadoes. But because so many people carry cell phones, the new system could reach more people faster.
I'm Isaac and that's what happened in technology this week.
