Camel Beauty Contest Winner Worth $2.7 Million

How much would you pay for a camel? If you're the crown prince of Dubai, then $2.7 million sounds about right. That's how much he paid for the winner of a camel beauty contest.

The contest was part of a desert festival designed to preserve the nomadic way of life. Nomads are people who don't live in one place. Instead they travel from one place to another. Before people started growing food on farms, they traveled to places where there were food and animals to eat. Then they moved on, following herds of animals or finding more food. Some nomads kept their own herds of animals and traveled with them to find new places for them to graze. This was the best way to survive in deserts or other places where food can be hard to find and difficult to grow.

There are fewer nomads nowadays but some places like Dubai, which is part of the United Arab Emirates, still have a nomadic population. At this year's contest, five judges look at every aspect of thousands of camel contestants. They look at the skin color, the humps, the legs, and even the lips and noses. Sixteen of the winning camels were sold for $4.5 million and over 100 trucks.

I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week.
