Olympic Torch Protesters Cause Crisis for China

The Olympic Torch is big news lately. The Olympic tradition is to light a torch in Athens, Greece, where the Olympic Games began thousands of years ago. Then runners carry the torch all the way around the world to wherever the games are being held. Since they're going to be played in China, people have been trying to put out the flame as a way to protest the actions of the Chinese government.

In Paris, France, and London, England, runners carried the torch and police fought with protesters who were trying to put out the flame. More protesters were waiting in San Francisco, the only stop for the torch in the US.

At issue are human rights in China. Recently, Tibetans rioted in parts of China and Tibet because they don't want the Chinese to rule their country any more. Many people around the world think that China is not being fair to the Tibetans. That's where the anti-China torch protests come in.

There are also people protesting in support of China. Many of them believe that the whole point of the Olympic Games is for athletes to compete in the spirit of friendship, and that it's not right to mix politics in with the games. They are waiting to see what happens next as the torch continues its journey to China.

I'm Lucy and that's what happened in Sports this week!
