Pope Benedict XVI Visits the US
Have you ever heard of the Popemobile? It's the name for Pope Benedict XVI's car. This week, the pope will visit the United States, and he is bringing the Popemobile with him. Mercedes Benz makes the car. Instead of a normal roof, there's a huge bulletproof bubble. The pope will stand safely inside the bubble and wave to people as he drives by.
Pope Benedict will begin his visit in Washington DC. He'll meet with
President Bush on the April 16th and celebrate his 81st birthday. During his five-day visit, he'll make time to drive around and wave at the hundreds of thousands of people who want to see him. After the White House in D.C, the pope will visit New York City. He'll visit Ground Zero, a site of the 9/11 attacks, and stop by Saint Patrick's Cathedral.
The pope is the leader of the Catholic Church. One out of four American adults is Catholic, so the church expects huge crowds will turn out to see him. The Popemobile is unique, but the idea is not. Many years ago, popes sat in a special chair called the sedia gestatoria. The pope sat in the throne and 12 men in red uniforms carried him through the crowds during special ceremonies.
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week.
