New York Film Festival Showcases International Indie Films

Movie lovers are heading to New York City for the Tribeca Film Festival. It's a weeklong event in downtown New York City, dedicated to independent filmmakers. The festival is named after a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, which was once in the shadow of the World Trade Center. After the attack on 9/11, actor Robert de Niro helped start the film festival as a way to bring the filmmaking community together.

The opening and closing films, Baby Mama and Speed Racer, figure to be big hits. But the festival is really for independent filmmakers who can gain attention and support for their work. This year at Tribeca, movie fans are excited about a documentary about the African country of Malawi called "I Am Because We Are." Madonna produced the film. The title is about a Zulu view of life that means that we are made up of the relationships we have with other people.

It's a great idea, and it works at the Tribeca Film Festival where there were 120 films from countries as far away as Pakistan and India. Another film that has people interested was a documentary called Standard Operating Procedure. It's about some American soldiers who abused Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib. After seven years, the Tribeca Film Festival is still showing movies that get people talking.

I'm Isaac and that's what happened in the arts this week.
