Cuba Accuses US of Provoking Protests

A group of women protesters was arrested in Cuba and the government there is blaming the United States for causing the trouble. The group, called the "Ladies in White" is made up of wives of political prisoners

Their husbands are in jail because they want the government of Cuba to change. Cuba says that those men are not political prisoners, but instead that they are agents who work for the US government. The group Amnesty International, says that of the 200 political prisoners in Cuba, 58 of them were locked up just for stating their political beliefs.

The women were protesting peacefully in Havana, the capital of Cuba. The police arrested 10 of them, put them on a bus, and made them go home. Then the Cuban government accused those women of working for the United States.

Cuba is not a democracy. One political party rules the government. It can be very strict, and in 2003 they had a crackdown and locked up 75 dissidents for political reasons. Since then, the president Fidel Castro retired and his brother Raul took over. Raul Castro has loosened some of the laws. Before, Cubans were not allowed to own DVD players, or to stay in the same hotels as foreigners. Now they can, but the US government says there should be more freedom in that country.

I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week.
