NFL Teams Pick Top College Players
Do you feel a draft? Last weekend, fans of the National Football League did. At the annual NFL draft, teams got to pick the top college players to add to their squads next season. The draft takes place in New York City at Radio City Music Hall.
The draft is designed to be fair to all the teams by letting those with the worst records in the previous season get first pick at the new players. That way, the talent is spread around, which helps keep the sport fun for fans. If a great team had first crack at the best players, then there wouldn't be much competition. Players have to sign a contract with the team that drafts them if they want to play next season. For serious football fans, the draft is a big deal. They filled the seats at Radio City to cheer and boo their team's choices.
This year the top draft pick was Jake Long. He played defensive tackle for the University of Michigan Wolverines. The Miami Dolphins, last year's worst team, picked him on Saturday. They paid $57 million to have Jake on their team. The first quarterback picked, Matt Ryan of Boston College, was chosen by the Atlanta Falcons. And the top running back, Darren McFadden of Arkansas, will join the Oakland Raiders.
I'm Lucy and that's what happened in sports this week!
