A Home Away from Home: New Planet May Resemble Earth

Astronomers discovered a planet that's more like Earth than anything we've seen before. The name of the planet is 581c and it might even support life!

The reason scientists say the planet could hold life is because it's so much like Earth. For one thing, the temperature is a reasonable 32 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, so it's not too hot and not too cold. Another thing is that the planet may have lots of water.

There are lots of neat things about 581c. Its sun is a red dwarf star. Red dwarfs are much larger than our own sun, but not as bright. So if you were on 581c, the sun would be huge in the sky and its color would be dark red. You'd also weigh more because gravity is much stronger on 581c than on our planet. If you weigh 100 pounds on Earth, you would weigh 160 pounds on 581c.

Someday we may find out if there really is life on this new planet, but it won't happen any time soon. The planet is more than 20 light years away. With our current technology, it would take hundreds of thousands of years to reach!

If there is life there, they'll have to come to us!
