Cold War Talk Returns: Russia and U.S. at Odds
Nuclear missiles are once again causing tension between Russia and the United States. Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened to pull out of a weapons agreement because the U.S. wants to put ten anti-nuclear missile defenses in Poland and the Czech Republic.
The U.S. says that the defense missiles would only shoot down nuclear missiles coming from enemies like Iran or North Korea. But Mr. Putin worries that our missiles could be used to attack Russia's nuclear warheads.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice said that President Putin's concerns are crazy. She said that Russia has thousands of missiles, far too many for the ten to harm.
President Putin states that the missiles will upset the balance of power in Europe. He wants to suspend the 1990 Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty. This agreement limits the amount of weapons each country can own. It was created to help keep the peace in Europe between Russia and NATO. NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It is an alliance between 25 European countries and the U.S.
The dispute over missiles has people worried that Russia and the U.S. could return to the days of very poor relations. That period of time was called the Cold War. It began after World War II and lasted nearly fifty years.
