America Argues Over Illegal Immigrants
Where did your grandparents come from? How about your great-grandparents? Unless you're a Native American, then chances are they came from a foreign country. Today, millions of immigrants still come to the United States. Most follow the laws that say who can enter and for how long.
But there are also millions of people in the country who don't follow those laws. They're called illegal aliens. But even though they are here illegally, they've become an important part of our country's economy. Now, there's a debate in Congress over what should be done about them.
Some Democrats and Republicans want to start a guest worker program. That would make it legal for these immigrants to work for a few years. They could even become citizens after a while.
But other Democrats say that letting all them work here legally will mean less money for American workers. And some Republicans say that it rewards people who broke the law. Last week, a bill in Congress to change the way immigration is managed failed because no one could agree.
In this weekly radio address President Bush said he would continue to push for a plan that would let some immigrants stay to work. He urged Congress to try again. It looks like there will be a lot more debating in the future.
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week!
What do you think should be done about illegal aliens? Let me know in this week's Call Out!
