Skateboarding Becomes a Team Sport

Skateboarders have a lot of their own words, like Ollie, grind, and frontside. But now they're going to need some cool slang for "captain" and "team," too! That's because a guy named Jeff Stern just started the first high school skateboard league.

The California High School Skateboard Club has seven five-player teams in its league. It took Stern a while to get the club going. He had to make sure schools didn't get in trouble if anyone got hurt. He also needed to convince skateboarders to compete together on teams. Jeff says he worked 75 hours a week for a year to pull everything together! Whoa!

He got advice from people who work with the world famous skateboarder, Tony Hawk. He also got a sponsorship from Nike who promised to award the league's Most Valuable Skater two pairs of sneakers every month for a year! Awesome! With names like that on his side, Stern finally got high school skateboarders interested.

With all the attention the club has gotten, next year promises to be even bigger. Who knows? Some of these skaters might go on to become the next Bam Margera or Chad Muska!

I'm Lucy and that's what happened in sports this week!

Let's play the Match Game and identify some famous skateboarders!
