World Leaders Gather to Talk About Troubling Topics
The leaders of the world's eight industrialized democracies got together in Germany last week to talk. This group's called the G8. It includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Each year, they discuss important world issues. One of the most important issues this year was global warming. Although the U.S. still won't agree to meet mandatory targets to cut pollution and slow global warming, there were some advances made. America is the world's biggest polluter, but worries that any drastic measures will hurt its economy. China is worried about the same thing.
AIDS in Africa was another issue the G8 leaders discussed. They talked about providing more drugs and treatment to people with HIV. In total, they agreed to provide over 60 billion dollars to fight diseases AIDS, malaria and other diseases.
Nuclear weapons were also a big topic. All eight countries agreed to ask North Korea to stop developing them. They also want Iran to stop researching nuclear technology.
Many critics argue that agreements reached during the meetings did not go far enough to solve the world problems. Hopefully, they are at least a step that will begin to make the world a healthier, safer place.
I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week!
Can you locate the countries named my story in this week's Pinpoint game?
