Immigration Bill Defeated: President Moves On

President Bush got bad news from the United States Senate that failed to pass a new immigration bill last week. Bush hoped the law would help solve the problem of people entering the United States illegally. These people are called illegal aliens. There are over 11 million of them living here! Bush wants a law that would make many of them legal guest workers.

Some Republican and Democratic senators worked on a bill that they hoped would pass a vote. The bill would've given some illegal immigrants a way to become US citizens. It also had new rules to make it harder for companies to hire illegal immigrants.

Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer from New York voted for the bill. He said it would fix a problem that everyone knew was broken. Senator Jeff Sessions, a Republican from Alabama, voted no, saying the bill would cause 8.7 million new illegal aliens to enter the US.

Republican Senator David Vitter from Louisiana opposed the bill, too. He said that it didn't do enough to keep illegal aliens from coming into the US to find work.

President Bush said he wouldn't work anymore on the problem of illegal immigration. That means a new bill will have to be proposed and passed by a future Congress and President.

I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week.
