Pirates of the African Coast

Pirates may seem like fun characters in the movies, but they're extremely dangerous in real life. Last week, there were several problems with real pirates off the coast of Africa and the United States Navy stepped in to lend a hand. A North Korean ship was attacked in the waters near Somalia. Eight pirates boarded the boat. There were 22 North Koreans, and they asked a nearby US Destroyer for help.

Before the American ship arrived, the North Koreans fought the pirates. They captured the pirates, but some people were hurt in the battle. The Navy ship arrived and gave medical aid to the injured North Koreans and the pirates.

Another ship, this time from Japan, was also attacked last week. Two speedboats rode up to the ship and boarded it. Another US destroyer showed up and sank the speedboats.

Many pirates these days come from Somalia or Nigeria. The governments of those countries aren't strong enough to keep track of pirates, so the waters around them can be dangerous. In fact, the problem is getting worse. This year, pirate attacks are up 14 percent. The United Nations Security Council asked countries to use their military to help fight pirates. The US Fifth Fleet and the French navy have volunteered to escort ships loaded with food on their way to Somalia.

I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week.

Let's play the pinpoint game and identify the countries mentioned in my story.
