Hooray for W00t!

W00t! There's a new word of the year. The word is w00t, and it's spelled W zero zero T. Merriam-Webster dictionary named w00t the word of the year. W00t is used online in video games as an expression of happiness. It's like hooray, or yay!

The president of Merriam-Webster, John Morse, said that W00t is part of a growing trend of online words that use numbers and letters in their spelling. Another word that uses numbers is leet, which stands for elite, but is spelled l33t. Using lots of those kinds of words with numbers is called leetspeak.

Some gamers think it's great that w00t made the dictionary, but they wonder why it's the word of the year for 2007. The word has been around since at least 1998, when players of Starcraft typed it when they won a game. For them w-0-0-t first stood for the phrase "We Own the Other Team."

Other people who don't game think w00t was a bad choice because nobody uses the term except a small group of hardcore gamers, and it's a word that probably won't be used for much longer. For now, though, w00t is the word.
