Giant Iraq Wedding Brings People Together
There was something to celebrate in Iraq recently. A massive wedding of 70 couples took place. That many people getting married at once is unusual, but what made the wedding really special were the people who were getting married.
The couples were made up of men and women from different religious sects. A sect is a religious group that is part of a larger religion, but different in some way. Two of the largest sects in Iraq are both Muslim. One is called Shia, and the other is called Sunni.
The Sunnis and the Shi'ites have been fighting against one another for power in Iraq. Many Sunnis and Shi'ites have been killed in the violence. In the middle of all the bloodshed, it's important to remember that not everyone wants to take part in the fighting and that these different sects have many things in common. That's what the wedding was about.
The couples got married in a big event to prove that there can be love between people of different sects, and that it's better for everyone to live together without all the fighting. The event was called the "Joyous Gathering" and for all the dressed up couples and their families, it was a joy to see Iraqis with different beliefs coming together.
I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week.
