"First Dog" Offers Holiday Tidings
There's a dog loose on the White House lawn. His name is Barney, and he is the pet of the President and First Lady Laura Bush. The Scottish Terrier is a star, with his own annual video called Barney Cam. This year's video shows Barney running around the White House lawn, watching the Christmas decorations go up, and dreaming of becoming a park ranger with his doggy friend, Miss Beazley.
Barney learns from President Bush that the White House grounds are actually a national park. There are almost 400 national parks across the country. Some of the most famous national parks are Glacier National Park in Montana, Yosemite in California, and Yellowstone in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. President Bush tells Barney that next year our government will spend one billion dollars fixing up the parks and hiring new park rangers.
The video also shows Barney with some important people. Dirk Kempthorne, the Secretary of the Interior, tells Barney about national parks, and Mary Bomar, the Director of the National Park Service, tells Barney how he can become a junior ranger. Tony Blair, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom also appears, as do the president's daughters Jenna and Barbara. You can see the video on the Whitehouse website.
I'm Ben and that's what happened in our nation this week.
