Brick by Brick - Lego Artist Sculpts Wonders
What's the coolest thing you ever made out of Legos? Was it a work of art? Nathan Sawaya would probably say yes. He's an artist who uses Legos to make sculptures. He's made an almost life-sized model of Han Solo, a pencil that's taller than he is, and a giant banana. All from Legos!
Sawaya used over a million Legos to make his art. He was only five years old when he got his first Lego set. He started making things right away and never stopped - all the way through high school and even college! Even after Sawaya became a lawyer, he made big Lego sculptures at night.
When Sawaya put some pictures of his work on the Internet, people started paying him to make things out of Legos. He makes portraits of people, monkeys, and strange figures. He spends two to six weeks making each one!
He said the hardest piece he ever made was a model of Marines raising the American flag over Iwo Jima. It took him an entire summer to finish! You've got a summer ahead of you, grab your Legos and see what you can make!
I'm Isaac and that's what happened in the arts this week!
Let's identify some popular building block toys in my Match Game!
