Afghanistan's Dangerous Road to Recovery

A recent bus bombing in the capital city of Kabul reminded everyone of the dangers that remain in the country of Afghanistan.

In 2001, after the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, DC, the United States declared war against the Taliban leaders of Afghanistan. Many of Al Qaeda's terrorist training camps were in Afghanistan. By the end of 2001, the Taliban were defeated.

Since then, troops from many countries, including the US, Canada, France, and Germany are in Afghanistan to help rebuild the country. They also support the new government led by President Hamid Karzai.

But, Taliban soldiers still roam the country. They constantly fight and try to take the country back. In recent months, terrorist acts such as suicide bombings have increased.

Afghanistan is a neighbor to Pakistan. Some people believe that Osama Bin Laden is hiding somewhere near the border between the two countries. Osama Bin Laden is a powerful terrorist leader who organized Al Qaeda.

Iran is another country that borders Afghanistan. The Iranians are helping Afghanistan by building factories and power plants there.

In the meantime, the US continues to send aid and money, as well as soldiers, to help Karzai's government.

I'm Michelle and that's what happened in the world this week!

Let's locate some of the countries in my story in this week's Pinpoint Game.
