China Discovers New Fossilized Feathered Dinosaur
An amazing new dinosaur was discovered last week. In China, researchers dug up a fossil of a 3,000-pound bird-like dinosaur. The creature had a ten-inch beak and claws at the ends of its arms. It was twice as tall as a human. The bird lived 85 million years ago!
This dinosaur is changing the way scientists think about birds. The theory was that as dinosaurs evolved more bird-like features, they became smaller in size. But this humongous bird proves that some dinosaurs stayed enormous, even as they evolved into birds.
Like today's biggest bird, the ostrich, this dinosaur couldn't fly. Scientists say it probably jumped around and attacked its prey with its claws and beak. They are calling the new species Gigantoraptor. Xing Xu, the scientist who found the fossils, described the gigantoraptor as looking like an enormous chicken. The first part that he found was the femur, or thighbone.
There are many more fossils in the area where it was found. Who knows what they'll dig up next?
I'm Adelbert and that's what happened in Science this week!
