The Making of Jakers!

Piggley Tales

We decided early on that, rather than the usual pre-school eleven-minute scripts, we would write half-hour stories; this would allow us to create more sophisticated stories, with B subplots.

The script process begins when we commission many storylines from a variety of writers. The storylines are then read by the executive producers, producers, director and story editor of the series, and roughly one story in nine is selected to go into production. Once a premise is approved, the writer begins a "beat outline"-a scene-by-scene breakdown of the entire story.

Beat outline

When the beat outline is approved, the first draft of the script begins. The screenwriters are responsible for the first two drafts of the script, then the story editor generally takes over and writes the final, or polish, draft. Script notes are given at all stages by all the producers, and the director. An educational consultant also reads and gives notes on all drafts and guides the curriculum of the series. Once a final draft is approved, the story moves forward in two directions.
