The Making of Jakers!

Hearing Voices

Meanwhile, after exhaustive auditioning, each of the characters was cast with a voice-over actor - a careful process of linking the right voice with each character. For JAKERS!, we've cast some of the best names in the business, starting with the legendary Mel Brooks as Wiley the Sheep! What Mel doesn't know about comedic timing isn't worth knowing. Members of our cast have also voiced some of the best-loved animated characters on television, in shows like The Powerpuff Girls, Rugrats, and The Simpsons.

Wiley and Mel Brooks

For each episode, the actors come together to record a script under the guidance of a voice director. Well, the actors don't all come together in one room: our Grandpa Piggley, actor Peadar Lamb, sends his authentic Irish brogue straight from a recording studio in Ireland! Once all the dialogue is recorded, the resulting track is given to the animatic editor (AE). The AE, working with the show director, times out the acting on the storyboard to fit with and around the dialogue.

Live action reference

At our studio, we also take it one step further by having live-action actors actually perform each scene on video. This provides the animators with invaluable additional reference material. It's one thing to read in the script: "An exhilarated Piggley and Ferny leap up from the tall grass - they are STOKED!!!" It's quite another to see that action, from the facial expressions to the physical leap, performed by real actors.
